Antony Roger Beauchamp Entwistle (1918/ 1957) était un photographe Anglais. En 1949 il épouse Sarah Churchill, la fille de Winston Churchill, le couple déménage à Los Angeles. Il photographie la jeune Audrey Hepburn et devient l'un des portraitistes les plus demandés de l'après guerre. Il a photographié entre autres Vivien Leigh, Liz Taylor, Greta Garbo, Charlie Chaplin et Marilyn Monroe. La première rencontre avec Marilyn Monroe eut lieu en 1950 au Berverly Hills Hôtel.

" Pendant que j’étais à Hollywood, je m’étais arrangé pour prendre une série de nouveaux visages pour un magazine américain de premier plan et Johnny Hyde m’a appelé et m’a dit qu’il avait quelqu’un qu’il pensait que je devrais rencontrer. Elle avait fait deux longs métrages qui avaient réussi, mais quand j’ai appelé son studio (20th century Fox), on m’a dit qu’ils n’avaient toujours pas de projets particuliers pour elle. Néanmoins, j’ai décidé de suivre mon intuition et j'ai prévu de passer plusieurs jours dans les deux semaines suivantes à prendre un nombre considérable de photos d’elle. Certaines de ces photos de Marilyn étaient, en fait, les premières photos de pin-up que je n’ai jamais prises, mais ne pas l’avoir photographié comme une pin-up aurait été un oubli presque inexcusable- et ma vue était aussi bonne que ses courbes."

Quand Johnny Hyde rentra dans la chambre du photographe afin de lui présenter Marilyn ce dernier fut tellement surpris par la petite taille et l'apparence de Hyde :"c'était un curieux petit gnome" qu’il lui a fallu quelques secondes avant de réaliser "que la fille qui l’avait précédé dans la chambre avait un visage qui ressemblait remarquablement à celui de la Vénus de Milo."

Le photographe a décrit Marilyn Monroe comme "particulièrement sûre d’elle-même, et méticuleusement consciente de chaque angle."

Ils firent plusieurs séances photos ensemble en 1950 et 1951, notamment pendant un cours de théâtre chez Charles Laughton (photo ci-dontre), une soirée chez Ben Lyon, ou des photos sexy à la plage ou en studio.

Antony Beauchamp se suicida en 1957, son autobiographie posthume fut publiée en 1958.

Antony Roger Beauchamp Entwistle (1918/ 1957) was an English photographer. In 1949 he married Winston Churchill’s daughter Sarah Churchill, and the couple moved to Los Angeles. He photographed the young Audrey Hepburn and became one of the most popular portrait artists of the post-war period. He photographed Vivien Leigh, Liz Taylor, Greta Garbo, Charlie Chaplin and Marilyn Monroe. The first meeting with Marilyn Monroe took place in 1950 at the Beverly Hills Hotel.

"Right from the start let me say that I suscribe to the marilyn monroe doctrine. The firts time I saw Marilyn was when she came to my hotel in Berverly Hills. While I was in Hollywood I had arranged to take a series of new faces for a leading american magazine and Johnny Hyde called me up and told me he had someone whom he thought I should meet. She had two feature parts in films wich had been successfull, but when I called her studio (Fox) I was told that they still had no particular plans for her. Nevertheless I decided to play a hunch and planned to spend several days in the following two weeks taking a considerable number of pictures of her. Some of these pictures of Marilyn were, in fact, the first pin-up girl photographs I ever took, but not to have photographed her as a pin-up girl would have been an almost inexcusable oversight- and my sight was as good as her curves."

When Johnny Hyde returned to the photographer’s room to introduce him to Marilyn, he was so surprised by Hyde’s small size and appearance : "He was a curious little gnome" that it took him a few seconds before he realized " that the girl who had preceded him into the room had a figure wich bore a remarkable resemblance to that of the Venus de Milo."

The photographer described Marilyn Monroe as 'particularly sure of herself, and meticulously aware of every angle."

They did several photo shoots together in 1950 and 1951, especially during a theater class at Charles Laughton’s, an evening at Ben Lyon’s, or sexy photos at the beach or in the studio.

Antony Beauchamp committed suicide in 1957, his posthumous biography was published in 1958.
