Richard Avedon (1923/2004) était un photographe américain de mode mais surtout un portraitiste qui a travaillé pour le magazine Harper's Bazaar puis Vogue. Il s’intéressait à la manière dont le portrait photographique traduit la personnalité et l’âme du sujet. Il a toujours eu une préférence pour le travail en studio qui isolait les gens de leur environnement. Il a photographié les plus grandes stars comme Brigitte Bardot ou The beatles, Audrey Hepburn, Isabelle Adjani, Nastassja Kinski et Marilyn Monroe. La première rencontre entre Avedon et Marilyn a eu lieu en 1954 alors qu'elle tournait 7 ans de reflexion sous la direction de Billy Wilder. Il fera à cette occasion des portraits du réalistateur et de la star.

" Marilyn donnait plus à l'objectif que toute autre actrice, toute autre femme que j'ai eu l'occasion de photographier, bien plus patiente, plus exigeante avec elle-même et plus à l'aise devant l'objectif qu'en dehors des séances de travail." ..."Elle pouvait faire de merveilleuses images avec n'importe quel photographe, ce qui est intéressant et très rare. Elle pensait toujours à ce que son image pouvait être pour son public. Elle examinait durant des heures les planches contacts, en quête de ce qu'elle appelait une photo "honnête", "réelle" ou "juste"."

Leur séance photo la plus célèbre est celle dite des "sirènes" publiées en 1958 dans le magazine Life pour laquelle Marilyn réincarne de façon burlesque les actrices Theda Bara, Lillian Russel, Clara Bow, Jean Harlow et Marlène Dietrich. Ce numéro de Life a battu tous les records de vente de l'époque -plus que n'importe quel numéro dans l'histoire du magazine- avec 6 3000 000 exemplaires vendus. Plus tard, Marilyn dira à Simone Signoret que cette séance photo fut l'un des plus beaux souvenirs de sa carrière.

Avedon et Marilyn ont travaillé ensemble à de nombreuses reprises, pour les photos publicitaires des films Le prince et la danseuse ou Certains l'aiment chaud.

L'une des photos les plus célèbres est un portrait en noir et blanc sur lequel Marilyn se montre vulnérable et fatiguée : "Pendant des heures, elle a dansé, chanté, flirté et elle a joué à être -elle a été- Marilyn Monroe. Et puis il y eut la chute inévitable. Et quand la nuit fut finie, elle s'est assise dans un coin comme une enfant, vide. Je la voyais s'asseoir tranquillement, sans expression sur son visage, et je me dirigeais vers elle, mais je ne voulais pas la photographier à son insu. Et comme j'arrivais avec l'appareil, j'ai vu qu'elle ne disait pas non..."

Richard Avedon (1923/2004) was an American fashion photographer but above all a portraitist who worked for the magazine Harper’s Bazaar then Vogue. He was interested in how the photographic portrait reflects the personality and soul of the subject. He always had a preference for studio work that isolated people from their environment. He photographed the greatest stars such as Brigitte Bardot or The beatles, Audrey Hepburn, Isabelle Adjani, Nastassja Kinski and Marilyn Monroe. The first meeting between Avedon and Marilyn took place in 1954 when she was shooting The 7 year itch under the direction of Billy Wilder. He will make portraits of the director and the star.
"Marilyn gave more to the lens than any other actress, any other woman I had the opportunity to photograph, much more patient, more demanding with herself and more comfortable in front of the lens than outside of work sessions."..." She could make wonderful images with any photographer, which is interesting and very rare. She always thought about what her image could be for her audience. She spent hours examining the contact plates, searching for what she called an "honest", "real" or "fair" photo."
Their most famous photo shoot is that of the "sirens" published in 1958 in the magazine Life for which Marilyn burlesque reincarnates the actresses Theda Bara, Lillian Russel, Clara Bow, Jean Harlow and Marlene Dietrich. This issue of Life broke all the sales records of the time-more than any issue in the history of the magazine-with 6,000,000 copies sold. Later, Marilyn told Simone Signoret that this photo shoot was one of the best memories of her career.
Avedon and Marilyn have worked together many times, for the commercials of the films The Prince and the showgirl or Some Like It Hot.
One of the most famous photos is a black and white portrait on which Marilyn shows herself vulnerable and tired : " For hours she danced and sang and flirted and did this thing that’s — she did Marilyn Monroe. And then there was the inevitable drop. And when the night was over and the white wine was over and the dancing was over, she sat in the corner like a child, with everything gone. I saw her sitting quietly without expression on her face, and I walked towards her but I wouldn’t photograph her without her knowledge of it. And as I came with the camera, I saw that she was not saying no'.
