Douglas Kirkland (1934/2022) est un portraitiste de renom. Il a photographié les plus grandes stars de Audrey Hepburn en passant par Jack Nicholson, Brigitte Bardot, Romy Schneider et Liz Taylor. Il a immortalisé Marilyn Monroe nue dans des draps de soie blanche en 1961 pour le magazine Look. Il trouva Marilyn "très blanche presque luminescente, cette apparition blanche avait l'air de flotter au ralenti. Il émanait d'elle une sorte de lueur". Moins populaire en terme de couvertures de magazines que Bert Stern qui lui aussi a photographié Marilyn nue dans un lit en 1962, ses photos sont tout aussi intimes. Douglas Kirkland explique avoir rencontré trois Marilyn Monroe différentes : la première lors premier rendez-vous était simple, accessible et très naturelle. Le jour de la séance photo, elle s’est transformée en en une Marilyn ultra sexy, il n’y avait qu'elle dans la pièce et il lui était impossible de détourner son regard d’elle. Enfin quelques jours après la séance, lors de leur dernier rendez-vous pour lui montrer les clichés, Kirkland raconte avoir découvert une personne déprimée, sombre qui n’avait rien a voir avec la personne qu'il avait photographié quelques jours plus tôt.

Douglas Kirkland (1934/2022) is a renowned portraitist. He has photographed the greatest stars of Audrey Hepburn, including Jack Nicholson, Brigitte Bardot, Romy Schneider and Liz Taylor. He immortalized Marilyn naked in white silk sheets in 1961 for Look magazine. He found Marilyn Monroe "very white almost luminescent, this white apparition seemed to float in slow motion. It emanated from her a kind of light". Less popular in terms of magazine covers than Bert Stern who also photographed Marilyn naked in a bed in 1962, her photos are just as intimate. Douglas Kirkland explains that he met three different Marilyn Monroe: the first meeting was simple, accessible and very natural. The day of the photo shoot, she turned into an ultra sexy Marilyn, there was only her in the room and it was impossible for her to look away from her. Finally, a few days after the session, during their last appointment to show her the shots, Kirkland says he discovered a depressed, dark person who had nothing to do with the person he had photographed a few days earlier.
