William Burnside dit Bill Burnside (1903/1985) était un photographe écossais qui travaillait dans le milieu du cinéma quand il a rencontré Marilyn Monroe en 1946. Il l'a photographiée à deux reprises en 1946 et 1948. Il représentait la J.Arthur Rank Organisation (société spécialisée dans le divertissement) à Hollywood après avoir réalisé des documentaires pour le gouvernement canadien avec John Grierson et après avoir été assistant d’abord d'Alexander Korda, puis de David O’Selznick. Il a rencontré Marilyn par l'intermédiare du photographe Bernard Of Hollywood alors qu'elle était en train de poser pour lui lors d'une session glamour. Burnside était assez intrigué et voulu la connaître mieux, ce qui s'est fait facilement quand elle a découvert qu’il connaissait Clark Gable : 'elle était obsédée par Clark Gable, elle avait une photographie de lui partout où elle allait'. Burnside voulu lui présenter le photographe Paul Hesse, afin qu'il la prenne en photo : "il était célèbre dans la publicité- une combinaison de David Bailey et Lord Lichfield-. Je me suis arrangé pour l’emmener à Malibu où il avait une maison sur la plage. Elle avait une heure et demie de retard, comme d’habitude, et j’étais très en colère. Nous sommes arrivés chez Paul, il l’a regardée et a dit, très gentiment : 'Chérie, tu es trop grosse'. C’était l’époque des beautés avec des longues jambes et minces. Elle a éclaté en sanglots, Paul nous a quittés pour prendre un verre et, je l’ai emmenée à la plage, je l’ai photographiée avec un Leica. Ça m'a semblé la calmer, elle a toujours aimé la caméra, ça l’a apaisée. Je pense que ce qu’elle aimait chez moi, c’était mon éducation; elle aimait Shelley et Keats, en plus de Tosh. Elle savait qu’elle avait besoin de connaissances. Physiquement, elle se méfiait des hommes et se méfiait de moi pendant les premiers mois de notre rencontre. Mais elle était très consciente de l'effet qu'elle faisait aux hommes.' Burnside raconte qu’il a envoyé des photos de Marilyn à Rank Organisation, suggérant qu’ils la prennent sous contrat :"Ils n’étaient pas excités. La seule réaction fut qu’elle était trop dodue. Mais ils ne la connaissaient pas. Si je l’emmenais au restaurant, quoi qu’il arrive, les serveurs étaient à ses pieds. Elle avait tout ce qu’il fallait à 20 ou 21 ans." D'après lui Marilyn et lui eurent une brève aventure intermittente qui s’est terminée naturellement : 'je suis allé en Argentine pour préparer un film pour Rank, qui n’est jamais sorti. Je suis parti longtemps. Quand je suis revenu, elle m’a donné un poème :' J’aurais pu t’aimer une fois et même le dire/ Mais tu es parti loin./ Quand tu es revenu, il était trop tard./ Et l’amour était un mot oublié. Te souviens-tu ?/
Les photos de Bill Burnside ont refait surface dans les années 70 puis dans les années 80. Les couvertures de magazines de ce photographe sont très peu nombreuses.

William Burnside aka Bill Burnside (1903/1985) was a Scottish photographer who worked in the film industry when he met Marilyn Monroe in 1946. He photographed it twice in 1946 and 1948. He was a film figure in his own right when he met marilyn. He was representating the J.Arthur Rank Organisation in Hollywood after making documentaries for a canadian government with John Grierson and having been assistant first to Alexander Korda, then to David O' Selzick; He met Marilyn at the photographer Bernard of Hollywood, where she was being put through the rigourus hoops of a glamour session. Burnside was intrigued enough to want to know her better, a matter which was easily fixed when she found he knew Clark Gable : 'she was obsessed by Clark Gable, carried his photography around everywhere'. Burnside arranged her to have other photographs taken, this time by Paul Hesse : "he was famous in advertising- a combination of David Bailey and Lord Lichfield-. I arranged to take her to Malibu where he had a beach house. She was one and half hours late-as usual- and I was very angry. We arrived at paul's and he took one look at her and said, quite kindly :'Darling, you're too fat'.Those were the days of longstemmed, slim-hipped beauties. She burst into tears, Paul left us to have drinks and, I took her down to the beach and photographed her with a Leica. That seem too calm her down, she always loved the camera, it soothed her.' I think what she wanted from me was my education; she was into Shelley and Keats, besides tosh. She knew that she needed knowledge. Physically she was wary of men and was wary of me for the first months of our knowing each other. But she was very aware of aware of how she affected men'. Burnside says he sent photographs of her to the rank Organisation, suggesting they sign her up : "they were not excited. The only reaction was that she was too plump. But they did not know her. If I took her to a restaurant, however flash, the waiters were ready to jump to her bidding. She had it there all rightn that star quality, at the age of 20 or 21.' He declared too tha he had an intermittent romance with her ended naturally : 'I had gone to Argentina to fix-up a film for Rank, wich never came off. I was away a long time. When I came back she gave me a poem :' I could have loved you once and even said it But you went away a long way away. When you came back it was too late. And love was forgotten word. Remember ?
